Professional Musicians

As the music performing group with the longest history in St. Joseph's College, a lot of professional musicians joined our band. Below is the short biographies of some of the musicians in our band.

Mr Julian Eramela, B Mus, LRSM, AMus TCL, LTCL, FTCL

As an old boy, Mr Eramela is one of the founding members of the Band. He has been conducting our band since our establishment. He is also serving as a committee member of the HK Schools Music and Speech Association, in which many advice were given for improvements under his direction.

Mr Chu learns piano since he was seven. Besides piano, he has also shown his great enthusiasm in music by learning Viola, Flute, Singing and Conducting. During his studies in SJC, he had led the Band to capture the champion of the Melodica Band competition from 2008 for 3 years.

Mr Jason Fong, ATCL

Mr Jason Fong studies piano since he was four, and is a holder of the ATCL diploma from Trinity College of Music. During his studies in St. Joseph's College, he served as the Principal Percussionist (2006 - 2012) in the School Orchestra and the conductor of the Melodica Band (2007 - 2012). Matriculated in 2012, he was offered places to read Mathematics at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford and Medicine and Surgery at University of Hong Kong.

Chester Leung, DipABRSM, LRSM

Mr Chester Leung was interested in piano playing since five years old, and he has been awarded at age 17, with the level of distinction, the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM). He studied in St. Joseph's College from 2006 to 2012, during which he served as a prominent flutist in the School Orchestra, as well as the Director of Music in the Melodica Band. Starting from Fall 2012, Chester is now studying Actuarial Science at University of Hong Kong.

Kevin Chu

Kevin learns piano since he was five and has been a member of the Band for 5 years. Kevin has also played in the School Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra as a violist. Under his leadership, the band has won the HK Schools Music Festival in the year 2011-2012.

Carl Ho, ATCL, LTCL

Carl started learning piano since he was five and euphonium since he was ten. He has since been an avid musician, and attained the ATCL and LTCL diploma in December 2010 and July 2012 respectively. He has served as a trombonist at Hong Kong Civic Youth Orchestra. He is also a skilled piano accompanist, and has participated in performances of Junior Choir of our school and The Pro-Musica Society of Hong Kong. Carl is directing the band in the year 2012-2014.

Darren Leung, DipABRSM

Darren has started learning piano at the age of 4. Since then, he showed great enthusiasm in music and is currently a holder of the DipABRSM certificate. He has also been the piano accompanist of the Junior Choir.

Nicholas Mo, DipABRSM

Nicholas has started learning piano at the age of 5. He joined the Band since Form 1 and had led sopranos, altos and basses respectively of the band since then. He completed ABRSM Grade 8 (Piano) in 2013 with distinction and attained Grade 8 Music Theory in the same year. He is currently a holder of the DipABRSM certificate.

Jeffrey Lau

Jeffery has started learning piano at the age of 4. He joined the Band since Form 1 and had led basses since Form 4. He showed great enthusiasm in music and completed ABRSM grade 7 in 2009.

Jason Cheng

Jason started learning piano at the age of 6. He joined the Band since Secondary 1 and had led the alto section head since Secondary 3. He started to led soprano part since Secondary 4. He completed ABRSM Grade 7 in 2014 with merit. Under his leadership, the band has won the Champion of the HKSMF melodica band competition and champion of the melodica ensemble competition in the 2015-2016 year.

Colman Cheung Shun Lai

Colman has started learning piano at the age of 6. He joined the band since Secondary 1 and had led soprano part since Secondary 3. He completed ABRSM Grade 7 with merit.

Mike has started learning piano at the age of 4. He joined the band since Secondary 1 and had led alto part since Secondary 3. He completed ABRSM Grade 8 with merit.
