Life without art will be very dull and boring. By carefully observing the world we live, we will find a lot of things that are aesthetically beautiful. With the aesthetic society, we would all gain insights into the wonderful world of art and live with art!

Why art?

Art is usually negelcted by Secondary School students nowadays in Hong Kong not only in their daily life and insdie the school curriculum. Perhaps one of the underlying origins is that Visual Art is not considered as a significant subject in most Hong Kong secondary schools. Students are not required to take lengthy exmainations for the subject; however, art is an indispensible element in our lives.

Many students may have mistaken that Visual Art is only about drawing and painting technique. In fact, apart from drawing, Visual Arts is also about photography, filmmaking, sculpturing, designing and performing arts. Students who want to persuade in industries, like actors, film directors and fashion designers are required to master those skills.

Our aim

The aim of the Aesthetic Society is to promote Art in school, and also cultivate students’ interest in Art of different media through different art-related activities. For example the annual Inter-class Banner Painting Competition, and also the art exhibition in the Green & White Day.

Visual Art lessons are introduced further into senior forms in the New Senior Secondary (known as the 3+3+4 curriculum). Students have to take Art lessons regularly in the new system. Such “Other Learning Experiences” will surely enhance the ability of secondary school students in both creating, and appreciating Art. Our society hopes that the activities we organize throughout the year can help students to prepare themselves for this new system, and also develop them into all-rounded individuals.

Our History

Since 1982, the Art and Craft Society took the role of promoting arts at St. Joseph's College. Major of its traditional functions include the art fete and art workshop, the prior aims at helping those who are in need in our society and the the latter one focuses on providing students a fun, creative and inspiring experience of arts.  In the year of 2003, the art and craft society has successfully transformed into the aesthetic society. The change not only features a more elegant and avant-garde name, but also symbolizes the elevation of simply promoting arts to a more comprehensive dimension - to create, to appreciate, to inspired and to be inspired.
